Connections 6.0 CR5 has been released

Today Connections 6.0 CR5 has been released – likely the last CR done under IBMs flag. It brings a few new features next to the collection of iFixes. So, what’s new? 1. Files ownership can now be transferred to another user (by the administrator as of now) 2. The new TinyMCE 5 editor is available for free, which allows you to extend and customise the editor in Connections even more with over 50 possible Plugins that allow you to bring in even more functionality! 3. Enhancements to the notifications and newsletters, e.g. link-stripping for non whitelisted URLs or a customisable…

Upgrade your Docker CE environment for the Component Pack

Docker has found a vulnerability in Docker CE and has fixed it in the current version (CVE-2019-5736). The Connections team has successfully tested Docker CE 18.06.2 and is recommending to upgrade to this version. If you are using Docker EE you should stay at 17.03.x for now, as this is the only supported version. You can find the new prerequisites here. You can find out how to upgrade your environment here.

IBM Connections 6.0 – which functionality is provided by the Component Pack?

I had been asked, what exactly I will be missing, if I don’t have the Component Pack / Customizer Lite / Elasticsearch standalone installed, as these add additional functionalities, which in some parts integrate seamlessly and it is hard to tell which component it is based on. The reason behind this question is, that the Component Pack requires a different technology stack (Docker, Kubernetes, Helm) than the base Connections one, which is built on WebSphere, so some customers have not deployed that, yet. The Component Pack right now basically has 3 major components it provides: Orient Me, Customizer as well…

How to add a banner notification to Orient Me?

With CR4 and specifically Component Pack for Connections 6.0 we have added the ability to notify Connections users of important news in Orient Me. This is a functionality which lack thereof in the past has kept some customers to move from the original Homepage to Orient Me. To enable and create banner news in Orient Me you need two things: the Connections Customizer as well as, obviously, Orient Me. 😉 If you have those two go to your Application Registry for the Customizer ( and create a new app. You then copy the following text in the Code Editor:…

How to activate the new newsletter design in Connections 6.0 CR4

I had been asked, why the newsletter are still looking the old way after upgrading Connections 6.0 to CR4. You’ll first need to update the notification config to activate the newsletter V2 design: In the properties section of the notification-config.xml you have to add the following line: It then should look like this: Then you’ll need to save it, sync the changes in WebSphere and restart the server containing the news application.

IBM Connections 6.0 CR4 – what’s new?

Last October the IBM has released CR3 for IBM Connections 6.0. This update centered our efforts on streamlining the user experience and providing a more contemporary UI with features focused on usability, engagement, and maintenance. It started delivering what we had promised since IBM Think last year and focussed on customer feedback and requirements. We brought new and quick access to recently used Communities as well as Files, making it much easier to get to the content a user mostly likely is looking for. A major change was to include ICEC for communities as the Highlights app for free to Connections. This allows community manager to create very…

When your community overview page is constantly reloading

I just happened to have an issue on a Connections 6.0 environment, where after installing an CR the community overview page kept reloading indefinitely.  Stopping the RichTextEditor app prevented that behaviour but of course this is not permanent solution. Matthias Schneider from my team pointed me in the right direction:  For the RTE Widget to function properly the role for person in the Files app must be set to All Authenticated in Application’s Realm. So I checked the role setting in my environment and indeed it was set to Everyone instead: I then changed it to All Authenticated in Application’s Realm… … restarted the…

Component Pack has been released

Just in time for Social Connections 14 in Berlin the Component Pack has been released (and yes, it’s a coincident, but certainly helping me on my session on this release). Releasing it was a major step as it now removes the hard wires to IBM Cloud private. It is now more open allowing you to use a management platform of choice, while of course still being able to be used with IBM Cloud private, if your company is using it already for other solutions as well. For those who are wondering what the Component Pack is – this is…
